ccrx 6700 That's Railroadin!
Приєднався 23 лис 2018
I'm Dave, host of this channel and I work track maintenance at the
Cumberland Mine Railroad. I started at Cumberland Mine in 1977 and worked
as a barge handler, barge loader and also part time track. Then 18 years ago
I became full time track maintenance.
I've made a short primer video to give you an overview of our Railroad here at
Cumberland Mine and tell you what all our channel is about. That video will give
you a lot of good info and background of our operation. Here's the link to watch.

We're in a Pickle...... Clutch went out of Amtrac's Regulator and it won't Move
Amtrac is in here tamping this week and their regulator broke down.
Clutch that drives the hydraulic pumps went bad and now the regulator
won't move. We are in a pickle, but the guys worked together and got
Amtrac's ballast regulator off the main. Then we had to load up the regulator
on a flat bed trailer to take it back to the shop. This is Amtrac of Maryland a
railroad contractor and not the Amtrak passenger service.

You think it rough now wait until they start making them in China.
I bet ole Shoestring was a subscriber to this channel. If not he would have loved this video.
You had mentioned that there are a variety of cars, such as Trinity and FreightCar America. How does the loader know when to stop to prevent overloading each individual capacity so as not to compress the load bearing springs contacting each other? I know that along tracks, some railroad companies employ axle heat sensors to indicate hot bearings. So, is it safe to say that there is a modern piece of technology to indicate to the loader when to stop loading, like maybe some sort of car serial number to trigger a manifest of a scheduled load to be transported to identify which cars are in a train?
It's a small wonder how anything could compress 9 heavy spring sets at the corners, amazing to see this in action, GREAT video!
Why not hook the regulator to one of your trucks, and push/pull the **** thing onto a side track, so others can get by? There's a siding right there!
That guy could probably lift your wallet out of your pocket without you knowing it
Thanks!
Full blown situation right there.
I was thinking the exact same thing s a response..when there’s a will, there’s a way..At least you want have to pay the repair bill. That’s railroading..thanks Dave.
Nice piece of equipment operator knows he stuff great breakdown video Dave thanks
Thank you for sharing! Hopefully all will work out for your crews.
The next time my Wife asks me about Rail car springs I'll have the answers for her, Joe Morris AKA >Joetrak, Dundalk MD.
Fun day on the railroad, huh! I wouldn't have thought that machine had a manual clutch on it.
Captain poopy pants 💩 💩 💩 💩 😂
Every day is different on the Cumberland Mine Railroad 😂. Glad they got er fixed! Happy Sunday 😃
Dave u broke my machine!! Thats comin ur pay!😂😂
LOL, if I had been running it Timothy it probably wouldn't have broken down. How about that! Thanks so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a wonderful day my friend.
Did you break both of the ballast regulators? HAHA just kidding
Both of them had problems Tom, Amtrac finished by using ours, but if I had been running them they probably wouldn't have broken down. How about that! :-) Thanks so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a wonderful day my friend.
It's lucky they fit those red flags to the trailer - otherwise I'd never see it as it barrels along the highway!!
Truck driver did tell me he put those on there just for you Richard.... :-) Thanks so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a wonderful day my friend.
@@ccrx6700 🙂 I just love the way in which the old 'rules of the road' still apply in the days of flashing beacons etc. Keep 'em coming Dave. Really enjoy your hard work. Thanks again.
*Don't mean to be picky but I believe it's spelled "Amtrak".*
You are right Local 6 News, Amtrak the passenger service is spelled with a k. Amtrac the railroad contractor we had in here is spelled with a c. Very confusing and I don't know why Amtrac calls themselves that, but they do. Thanks so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a wonderful day my friend.
That was a strange break down Dave. It happened in daylight and it wasn’t even raining
Your right about that Ian, how lucky could we get.... :-) Last time the regulator broke down here it was so cold the truck heater wouldn't keep me warm. Thanks so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a wonderful day my friend.
Boy, that Mid-Atlantic Tractor Kenworth T800W was quite a service truck. I'm not sure I've ever seen one so beefy and with such a large service body. Quite impressive and handsome. And the Peterbilt hauling out the regulator was another nice visitor to the railroad. 🤠👍
I figured that service truck would turn you on Scotty, it was one nice truck, will have a short video out on it soon. I was thinking of you when I was taping it. Thanks so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a wonderful day my friend.
@@ccrx6700 I'll be watching. I hope the driver is proud to have his truck showcased by you. I find that many of the drivers that see their trucks on my channel are thrilled to see them on YT and they show their friends and family.
When you least expect it that is when things break. I'm sure by the amount of work they do they expect these type of things. Glad you were able to video what happened. I was close to your neck of the woods last week. I was in Altoona, a bit of distance from Washington state!
The defect detector is defective. Is there a defect detector for the defect detector?
Actually yes there is nobux. After a train passes the detector the computer does an integrity check on it's system components and if there is a problem, then it will give a message to that effect. The wonders of modern machinery! :-) Thanks so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a wonderful day my friend.
@@ccrx6700 🙂
Not good and been in that situation while working with the surf crew. Thanks again for sharing Dave and have a great rest of your weekend.(Steve)
Dave, plug the name and model number of the regulator in a search engine and see if there are manuals free to read and download online. I looked up the KBR850 and there are various manuals online to download or read in .pdf form. Might help you out sometime. I reckon you can find manuals for most heavy equipment online. I reckon that's railroading.
5:47 That is 460629 miles on the truck not 46629. Nearing one half million miles. Clutch on the regulator looks like a Twin Disc unit. Have worn out a few. Most of them wore out the teeth on the linings after the pilot bearing wore out. We would get about 7500 hours on the bearing before failure.
It reminds me of our sons who are farmers. All the equipment: combines, tractors, planters, etc. is great - when it is working. Like these Regulators, when the equipment is down, you have to fix it :) An amazing job to get everything off the tracks and the one Regulator moving again. You also did track repair - so this was not a bad, bad day :)
Amtrac look well organised getting the machine loaded so soon. Have the same kind of problems here with big yella things breaking at the worst time, after being tinkered with all week in the yard they should be perfect, they always seem to have another trick up their sleeve to catch us out LOL.
Several things come to mind here, #1, bad things happen in 3s, #2, the movie, "Bad Day at Black Rock", #3, one of those "fubar" days, #4, if there was 3rd rail on the track, just call for a "Super-size" Lionel tamper-regulator. Poor Dave, its just one of "those days" when nothing goes right, time for a few tall cold ones (non-alcoholic) when you get home!
Great video with equipment working the way it does something has to break at some point
Have ran Harsco (Tampers)TamperLooked like Fun thanks
Thank you for sharing...I have KCS that runs behind my home..they run to and from the refineries and shipping docks transferring coke ,military equipment and etc...what is a good portable radio for listening ...
Eaton fuller transmission shifters are colour coded. Blue split an 8LL or 15 speed. Red be a 13 speed and grey is the 18 speed.
Wow, a double for trouble day! Hopefully, you'll be getting your equipment all fixed soon. Breakdowns will happen, but ohhh, when they do! Neat video. Boy, that close quarters shot, I thought ya might get pinched, it was so close. I'm glad you didn't!! Thanks for bringing us along, and have a good and safe day!
One thing about renting equipment is that you don''t have to pay for the parts and repairs.
You are right about that Lynn, luckily we got our regulator working enough to finish the week out tamping. Thanks so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a wonderful day my friend.
That really sucks, but at least you have a clear track now, and can get back to work!
Yes it does, but that's railroading Mojo.... :-) Better than a derailment tho. Thanks so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a wonderful day my friend.
That KW service truck would look good with Iron Synergy on it😊 Just saying. Someone checked all the boxes on the purchase order👨🔧👨🔧🚛🚂⛏️👷♂️🇨🇦🇺🇲🙋
I think it would look even better with you behind the wheel Doug! Thanks so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a wonderful day my friend.
Hey Dave, like your dad said get her done thanks for sharing🚂🚂
I was hoping to see the end result and the grinding of the rail flush...oh well, maybe next time?😊
Yes landoll makes low boys with rail in it. Then you can load it like a tow truck, or at a yard paved over. Ron Pratt on you tube has one. Sorry about the regulator. But nice to see trackwork for improvement.
Some days it just pays to know a tow truck driver!
I want to love a job as much as you do! I would love to work with someone like you! Your channel is one of a very few that makes problems into fun adventures! We need more folks like you! Keep up the good work!
LMAF, we got a female driver,,,,,, NICE! 😂
Not very often that happens but when it does it's a big event Adam.... :-) Thanks so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a wonderful day my friend.
I did not know that. Somewhere, there are factories that make mass quantities of various size and capacity springs. I've seen small spring making machines for automotive components, like tension springs for levers, etc. Imagine the monster size machinery it takes to make those coils. BTW it's time for the annual spring sale. Springs, 50% off, at Mr. Haney's Spring Emporium. Get yours today!
I love it Dave!! Another one of your really cool train videos for us to enjoy. That piece of machinery looks like it's pretty heavy sitting on that truck.
Really glad you enjoyed this one William. Regulator weighs around 38,000 pounds, bout half what the tamper weighs. Thanks so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a wonderful day my friend.
Won't be long and that will be 100 year old steel! Awesome!
Hey, a few bungee cords and you can hold those wings up. 😅😅😅😅😅
When I was working in the MOW shop building new regulators from a combination of rebuilt parts and new parts supplied by Kershaw in kit form, we used to put an electric emergency hydraulic pump on them so the plow, broom, and wings could be picked up off the track and the machine towed out of the way without any outside help in instances like this. Those pumps were powered with a modified 12V Ford starter motor. They were pretty handy to have in cases like you had. One drawback though was if the operator didn’t turn the pump on for a few seconds once or twice a week, it wouldn’t work when you needed it. I went through a TKO and when it came time to wire things up, I used an extra rail jack timer from another TKO to add a 10 second timed power on circuit to the emergency pump to run that pump every time the key was turned on. It seemed to work OK, but I didn’t keep track of that machine after it went to a gang. Their operator probably thought there was something wrong with it and had the mechanic disable the circuit if I had to guess. I did update the wiring diagram with that circuit and it’s intended purpose, so hopefully it wasn’t disabled. Have a good day Dave, and be safe in your duties my friend!
That's a great idea Ralfie. My tamper has an emergency hydraulic pump on it and while I'm not sure what it is, it looks like a starter motor off something. Thanks so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a wonderful day my friend.
